To all our Pendergast Fans...
If you've shopped at Chapters or perused our blog, website or facebook page, then I'm sure you are aware that Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child are among our staffs absolute fav authors. They have recently introduced a new character, Gideon Crew in their newest book Gideon's Sword. With the release of this new character they have been hyping it up with special facebook posts, and cell phone messages if you choose to sign up. They are fun and clever and I wanted to share them with you. Check out this article about the two authors and their newest addition. And if you have facebook then I highly recommend liking their page. They always keep me entertained.
What's your favorite Doug and Linc book? Mine, Thunderhead!

Snowy Days!
Since we seem to be getting so much of the white stuff this year, I decided it was time to make a list of all of my favorite books to snuggle up with. I've been asking around for every ones fav book that they can just never get tired of reading. Some surprised me, some I had on my list too and others I had never read. I'm interested to see yours!
If you love quirky mysterys like One for the Money by Janet Evanovich, then you would appreciate J. A. Konrath's, Jacqueline Daniels Mysterys. With titles like Whiskey Sour and Bloody Mary, how can you go wrong? They are laugh out loud funny with great characters and amusing situations, they are sure to pass the day along. And they include drink recipes to keep you extra warm!
Another one of my favorite books to read is Hope for Flowers by Trina Paulus. I can read this book over and over again and I always fall in love with the story each time. It's a whimsical story with wonderful illustrations about two caterpillars that discover what is truly important in life and the power of love and friendship. Along the same lines as Hope for Flowers, is the whole, awesome collection of Shel Silverstein. I just love every single collection of his and just began reading them to my two girls at bedtime. They are so into the silly poems and look forward to reading them together as a family. This is a great way to introduce poetry to your kids especially when you are snowed in! The website has some fun games and printables too!
So what's your best snowed in book? Here's what people had to say -
1. Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats - "This has always been a favorite to read when it's snowing for my kids."
2. The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon - While all seven books are filled with fascinating history and rich stories, the character Jamie Fraser is single-handedly responsible for jump starting the libidos of so many women. Diana is one of the greatest storytellers and will always keep you warm and cozy on those cold days!
3. Anything Rumi by Rumi - Beautiful collections of poetry that portrays love at its best and worse and everything in between. It's always a good time to flip through and read.
4. Four Past Midnight by Stephen King - "I really enjoyed this collection..Four stories that will keep you terrified and wanting more."
5. Sophie Kinsella! "I just can't get enough of this guilty pleasure!"
6. Scott Pilgrim's V#1 Precious Little Life by Brian Lee O'Malley - "Lots of pop culture and video game references especially those growing up in the 80's. It's a trip reading these."
7. Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien - A timeless series that is a MUST read at some point in your life so if you haven't yet, when you're snowed in would be the perfect time to dig in!
Some fun titles I found with the word snow in them -
The History of the Snowmen by Bob Eckstein
Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson
Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
How to build an Igloo and other Snow Shelters by Norbert Yankielun
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost
Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson

What's your reading goal?
Here we are in January of 2011 and I'm looking to set my reading goal. I have never done this in years past but I know several people who do. I've always just read what I could read and didn't give it a second thought. After reading, hearing and speaking with others about their reading goals I've decided that books were important to me and so I should have a goal to do better in what I love.
So lets do it! Anyone can join at any time!
1. There are five levels to this challenge...Pick your poison:
2. Post your name (first name only is ok), city, and your reading goal for 2011 level in the comment section of this post below.
3. Check in at our website's message board and look for your Name, city and goal to show up as a topic (If you don't see it up within 3 days after commenting please email us as you will not be considered entered until that appears).
4. When you complete a book, click on your name and add a comment on the message board with the Title, author and a short review on it. Books read prior to January 1, 2011 do NOT count.
5. Feel free to browse the message boards of other challengers. You can view others goals and reviews, get ideas for books that may interest you and share your hits & misses. See how everyone is doing to acheive their goal and help encourage them!
6. Most importantly, besides the reward of fulfilling a goal for 2011 by doing what you love..there will be a prize in each level! At the end of 2011 everyone who completed and/or succeeded their goal will be entered in a drawing. Winners will be announced in the first week of January 2012!
Good Luck to everyone, I can't wait to see what you are all reading!

CHOCOLATE and WORDS! Two of my favorite things..are they yours?
Downtown has come together to create a unique draw for those of you who call the Berkshires home and others who travel to this cold place in the mountains for pleasure, although I will say, I am grateful to be living in the Berkshires all of my life, it's beautiful! HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!
Chocolate Berkshires is a month-long festival of our favorite February treat – Chocolate! You know that in the wintry Berkshires nothing works better to brighten the day than a bit of indulgence…. So we’re all coming together to create a county-wide celebration of all things Chocolate. Join your friends, neighbors, local businesses, winter visitors and likely some chocolate-loving skiiers as we dip these Berkshire hills into a fragrant concoction! Chapters will be offering a FREE Bubble Chocolate bar with your purchase of $30 or more during the month of February! Check out the link to see what all of our friends around town will be offering and be sure to take advantage so that we can keep downtown moving onwards and upwards!
I wanted to mention an upcoming writing workshop we will be hosting that I am really excited about. For those of you who visit our calendar of events and noticed a blank page, it's because the calendar is boycotting changing over to 2011, it apparently just wants to stay 2010! Keep checking back as we are in the process of fixing it. We will be posting on our facebook page as well as an email that will be going out next week to notify you of our happenings!
